“Resident Evil” topped the domestic box office with an estimated $60 million opening, helping to lift overall weekend ticket sales by 28% from the prior week, according to a report from Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian.

The Sony (SONY [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SONY]) release earned $60 million from 3,684 theaters during the Sept. 18-20 weekend, giving it a strong per-location average of $16,287. It accounted for about 54% of the estimated $110.3 million generated by all films in North America.

The movie also opened with $48.3 million in international markets, bringing its worldwide debut to $108.3 million. That marked the biggest global opening in the history of the “Resident Evil” franchise.

Directed by Zach Cregger, the R-rated horror film stars Austin Abrams and Kali Reis in the story of a medical courier caught in a nightmarish fight for survival.

The opening provided another boost for a horror genre that has shown unusual strength this year. Horror films have generated an estimated $1.17 billion domestically in 2026, already exceeding the genre’s full-year total in 2017 with more than three months remaining.

DOMESTIC TICKET SALES SHOW STRONG GROWTH

The overall domestic box office rose 44% from the comparable weekend a year earlier. The weekend’s 10 highest-grossing movies generated a combined $101.7 million.

Year-to-date domestic ticket sales reached an estimated $7.64 billion through Sept. 20. That was up nearly 19% from $6.43 billion at the same point last year.

The gains suggest movie theaters are maintaining momentum as the industry moves into the fall release season. The strong showing also gives studios and theater operators further evidence that recognizable franchises and horror movies can still motivate consumers to see films on the big screen.

IMAX (IMAX [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/IMAX]) screens contributed $9.1 million to the domestic opening of “Resident Evil,” or about 15% of its North American total. The film generated $14.5 million worldwide on IMAX screens.

‘PRACTICAL MAGIC 2’ TAKES SECOND PLACE

Warner Bros.’ (WBD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/WBD]) “Practical Magic 2” ranked second with $12.2 million in its second weekend. Ticket sales fell 59% from the movie’s debut, bringing its domestic total to $50 million and its worldwide tally to $76.8 million.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained in third place with $6.5 million in its eighth weekend. The Sony blockbuster has generated $944.5 million domestically and $2.48 billion worldwide.

Universal’s (CMCSA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/CMCSA]) “The Odyssey” followed with $4.9 million. The Christopher Nolan epic has now earned $609.8 million domestically and $1.72 billion worldwide.

“Coyote vs. Acme” rounded out the top five with $4.5 million, bringing its four-week domestic total to $54.8 million.

New releases farther down the chart included “Daniel and the Fiery Furnace” with $3.1 million and a 40th-anniversary rerelease of “The Transformers: The Movie” with $3.1 million. “The Weight,” starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, opened with $2.3 million.
